Hiking along the Bruce Trail

July 19, 2025

The Bruce Trail is a 900-kilometer footpath that stretches from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Tobermory, following the Niagara Escarpment. It is Canada’s oldest and longest marked footpath, primarily maintained by volunteers.

This time, we will explore the section in between Lower Sydenham Fall and Borer’s Fall Dog Park. Which is around 10 kilometers.

🌄 Scenic Features & Viewpoints

🔹 Lower Sydenham Falls

  • A smaller but charming ribbon-style waterfall nestled in a peaceful, wooded ravine
  • Beautiful in spring and after rainfall
  • Great photo spot from a footbridge above

🔹 Rocky Escarpment Edges

  • The trail follows the Niagara Escarpment, offering elevated views over the Dundas Valley
  • Look for scenic vistas through gaps in the trees, especially in fall or early spring before the leaves are fully out

🔹 Rail Trail Crossings

  • You’ll intersect with the Dundas Valley Trail system and old railway beds
  • These flat stretches provide open views of the valley and farmlands

🔹 Borer’s Falls

  • A dramatic curtain waterfall over 15 meters high, easily viewed from a stone bridge
  • Nearby is the Borer’s Falls Dog Park, which has both forest trails and an open field
  • From the lookout above the falls, you can see deep into the Spencer Gorge in some spots

Helpful Tips

  • Most of the trails are natural dirt and rocky paths. Some sections can be slippery or uneven, grippy hiking shoes are a must.

  • Dogs are welcome, but please keep them on a leash. They’ll love the trails just as much as you!
