It has a long history tied to Indigenous communities, early European settlers, and the development of Toronto. Today, it is recognized as a Canadian Heritage River because of its cultural and natural significance.

One of the most remarkable seasonal events in the Humber is the salmon run. Each fall (usually late September to early November, depending on water temperature and flow), Chinook salmon and sometimes Coho salmon swim upstream from Lake Ontario into the Humber River and its tributaries to spawn.

Salmon Run: Salmon are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean, and then return to the same river to reproduce. After spawning, most Pacific salmon (like Chinook) die, leaving nutrients that enrich the river ecosystem.

Where to see it: One of the best places is Etienne Brûlé Park, near Old Mill subway station in Toronto. There, people can actually watch large salmon leap up the river’s small waterfalls and fish ladders.

Date and Time: September 28th, 2025 , Sunday, 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Location: Area along Humber River

Fees:

• Members: Free

• Non-members: $10/ family (e-transfer: ownature21@gmail.com)

•New member registration below:

Registation Link

Transportation:

• Self-drive or carpooling is encouraged; suggested carpool fee: $10 per person.

Other Costs: No. Please note that any park entry or parking fees are not included and will be the responsibility of participants.

Outdoor Leader: Zhong, Feng (info.wownature@gmail.com)

Age Requirement: 8-65 years old; minors under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Meeting Time: September 28th, Sunday, 9:00 AM

Meeting Location: To be informed after registration.

Hiking Distance: Approximately 9 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Level A, Beginner level.
