The first time I noticed the small town of Ancaster was when I was driving around the Dundas Valley a few years ago. There were unique houses on both sides of the winding mountain road. I was curious… what kind of town gave birth to so many of those manor-styled houses? That was when I came up with the idea of having an \u200b\u200bin-depth exploration of this town.<\/p>

The town of Ancaster is in Hamilton and was founded in 1793. It has a long history and is the earliest town in Ontario. Because it was the hub of the trade routes at the time, it quickly developed into a British community dominated by the upper class. The population once exceeded that of Toronto and Hamilton, and it was once the largest industrial center in Ontario.<\/p>

Strolling around the town, you can catch a glimpse of the prosperity of the past in the mansions with different shapes, subtle and restrained, and the exquisite English-style gardens.<\/p>

History of Ancaster<\/strong><\/p>

Once upon a time, the town of Ancaster was known locally as Wilston’s Mill.<\/p>

As one of the founders of the town, James Wilston, started a mill and fur trade business with his partner Richard Beasley which drove the development of the town and became a direct driving force for the town’s prosperity. Today, the main street of Ancaster town is still named after Wilston, which shows James Wilston’s status in the hearts of local residents.<\/p>

Entertainment and Events<\/strong><\/p>

Today, Ancaster Mill is a very well-known local specialty restaurant. It is integrated with the artificial waterfall landscape adapted to local conditions. Dining here would be a very enjoyable experience. An old friend and I agreed to meet and enjoy a romantic dinner here after the pandemic. With the release of indoor control, our meeting should come to fruition soon.<\/p>

Do you know? The Heritage Trail, a hiking trail next to Ancaster Mill, leads directly into the well-known Dundas Valley Nature Reserve. In addition to enjoying the scenery of the town, you can also explore the historical sites of the town, and save the parking fee for Dundas Valley!<\/p>

As a town adjacent to the Dundas Valley Nature Reserve, Ancaster has more free parking and trail entrances into the reserve. Do you want to find it yourself? You’re more than welcome to share relevant information in the comment section.<\/p>

In addition, the well-known scenic spots such as Tiffany Falls, Sherman Falls and Dundas Peak are all close to the town. If you plan well, it is a day trip around the town that integrates hiking, fitness, food tasting and historical site exploration!<\/p>
